Here painting turned into something more physical and material. Abandoning the classical framework of painting, I became interested in how painting could become space. In that way I began to supplement my work with the use of textile : collaging, sewing, painting, draping and stretching it freely. In Antwerp I took the course of InSitu at the academy, where I developed a more performative and corporeal approach to the subject matter thus being able to experiment with a sculpture, video and installation. After my studies I felt quite nostalgic and I decided to paint again. I thought that painting was the beautifulest medium and the most expressive, the one that gave me more freedom.
By now, my practice is based on the research of balance between elements such as abstraction, depth, and form. I have such a bodily approach which translates into a process of stratification and layering the surface of the canvas.
When I start to paint I often don’t know how I’m acting, over time an image appears before my eyes. At that point a dialogue between me and the work will emerge. I follow it. I wait the image telling me how to go forward. I’m guided by instinct. I could say, it is a battle between me and myself that flows on the matter.
I think painting as a way to dig into a self, and to create a bond between me and my surroundings. I try to bring to the surface images that are the internalized interpretation of what reality offers me. That gives me freedom.
